There are SO many rules and guidelines for women when we get pregnant – it’s hard to keep track sometimes. It’s important to not only pay attention to what you put in your body, but also what you put ON your body – as in all your skincare & beauty products. There’s more and more research coming out about what ingredients to stay away from and what’s okay while you’re growing a little angel inside your belly! <3
One of my favorite resources to double check the safety of certain ingredients while I’m pregnant is with my dermatologist. But being that I’m an esthetician, I also learned about these things while studying the skin and try to stay up on new research that comes out.
Here is a quick list of COMMON ingredients to AVOID (or at least limit) during pregnancy:
- Retinoids, Retin-A, retinol, etc (any derivative of Vitamin A)
- Salicylic Acid
- Hydroquionone (a skin lightening agent found in moisturizers)
- Phthalates (I recommend avoiding these even when not pregnant)
- Formaldehyde (in a lot of nail polish)
- Parabens (again…I recommend avoiding these at all times)
The list could go on and on and get real nit-picky, but these are some of the most common ones to stay away from.
And now on to the GOOD stuff! My faves!
So what is GOOD to use while pregnant? I’ve listed some of my favorite products that are preggo-safe here! All are linked (blue text) for you! 🙂 Would love to know what items you couldn’t live without too!
Being that you need to use mostly gentle products during pregnancy, you might miss some stronger exfoliation during these months – at least I did! I LOVE using this cleanser to help slough off dead skin cells. It gave me the exfoliation I was looking for in a safe to use while pregnant cleanser. This stuff is amazing! This cleanser is also great if you just have sensitive skin but still need to exfoliate – the lactic acid is a great alternative to other exfoliants out there.
This peel is great! And I LOVE that Juice Beauty makes a version that specifically for pregnancy! Thank you JB!!! Again, if you’re used to stronger peels or getting skin treatments done to keep your skin young & fresh, and then all of that comes to a hault when you find out you’re expecting — this is a great alternative home treatment to give your skin the refresh it might need.
Seriously – I’m in LOVE with this serum – even if you’re not pregnant – I HIGHLY recommend it. It feels so luxurious on the skin, absorbs perfectly and the ingredients are clean! I normally recommend everyone use a Vitamin C serum as something very basic every single person should have in their skincare regime – but this serum claims to be 62 times more effective than vitamin c! And so far – I’m loving this product and plan to continue use post pregnancy too!
So nourishing, so creamy, so hydrating, so one of my fave masks EVER! If you’re looking for a super-boost of moisture and hydration – this mask is worth it! I seriously love sleeping in this mask and my skin feels as smooth as can be the next day. I like to even not wash my face the next morning after using this and possibly just either use some micellar water to cleanse or even no water at all – and just a quick gentle wipe and then apply my morning products. This one is also great for travel – so if you fly a lot – pack this one with you! I did just want to point out quickly that this mask does have some peppermint oil in it – so while it’s safe for use while pregnant, I would steer clear of regular use of this while nursing because peppermint will tank your supply!
I love butter London nail lacquer – first of all – so many good colors! And then second of all, it’s safer to use than regular nail polish! This stuff glides on, the brush applicator is the perfect size, it doesn’t get air bubbles easily and you can actually feel better about what you’re putting on your nails! I LOVE this stuff.
A few other tips…always make sure you’re using a safe sunscreen EVERY SINGLE DAY on your skin! That’s for everyone – not just for when you’re pregnant. But your skin can become more sensitive to the sun when pregnant so it’s uber important during your pregnancy. But overall – this is the number one simplest way to avoid aging your skin!!!
And last, moisturize that belly early on – pliable, hydrated skin is less likely to get stretch marks – so don’t wait until you start growing – start early with that belly balm and you’ll be happy you did! 🙂
What products did you love while being pregnant? I swear – the small stuff that makes you feel just a little better about yourself during this time in your life is SO worth it! 🙂
